    Here is a good diagram of what happens before a strike.



    The idea that lightning goes up from the ground is because the ground has a positive charge and the clouds have a negative charge. But the electrical charge (be it in a battery, a welder or lightning) electricity actually flows from negative to positive. Contrary to what we know as conventional electrical flow.
