With the exception of hate speech and inciting violence, Australian’s are free to say whatever they like.
… and some may say that what Folau said was hate speech against gays. One persons hate, is another’s persons gospel
Where does the law draw the line?
Folau certainly isn’t be prosecuted for hate speech. Only breech of contract.
There are consequences for what he says. He broke is contract and therefor can have the contract cancelled. Fairly simple really.
AFAIK he never actually had a social media clause in his contract - he had been read the riot act before, IE; you do it again and you’re fired.
Its all to do with money. RA cant afford to lose sponsorship deals because some dimwit cant keep his opinions to himself.
RA has really handled this issue very badly and probably deserve to get sued… I reckon they should just have fined him $2m every time he opened his mouth …I bet it wouldn’t take too long for him to hit the mute button.
Maybe not a social media clause but most sports have a “Bringing the sport into disrepute” clause.
I haven’t seen his contract but a month or so back, all the interested parties sat in a room for a few days and at the end RA still decided they were on firm ground to sack him.
its also interesting that the biggest sponsor of RA is Qantas, managed by that queer Alan Joyce, I wonder and suspect that has played a significant part in this shit throwing debacle
I’m sure the AFL would have the same reaction.
